January 2023 Newsletter

We hope that our CYWO members and their families have had an enjoyable Christmas break and we wish you all a happy, healthy and successful year in 2023!

When we start back to rehearsals this coming Saturday, 7th January, we can anticipate a busy period of rehearsals in preparation for our Spring Concert at Camberley Theatre in May. This year there will only be one May concert as the number that attended across the two nights in 2022 was insufficient to justify us booking the venue for more than one night in 2023, due to the cost. All three sections will still participate in the concert and details regarding booking seats for the May concert will be provided in our March Newsletter.

To ensure that the orchestra is able to perform at best capacity, could we please ask that you check the monthly Newsletters/Website for Orchestra performances when you are making plans for 2023. Also check the CYWO web site if it appears that adverse weather may prevent rehearsals taking place on a Saturday during the Spring Term - we will post any urgent messages there.

Open Morning

We are holding our next Open Morning on 14 January 2023. This will comprise the following sessions:

  • an 'Open Rehearsal' from 9.30am to 12.00noon: to give those interested in joining CYWO the opportunity to spend a morning in rehearsal with one of our sections before making a decision regarding joining;

  • a 'Come and Try' session between 11.15am and 12.00noon for those interested in learning a woodwind or brass instrument. Instruments will be provided by CYWO/Surrey Arts for the 'Come and Try' session.

If, as a result of attending the 'Come and Try' session, a young person then wishes to start lessons on the instrument they have chosen, the cost of the lessons for the first term will be funded by CYWO under our Bursary Scheme.

It would be appreciated if our members and parents could promote our Open Morning to anyone they think would be interested in joining CYWO, or learning an instrument. Thank You!

Children in Need

In our December 2022 Newsletter, we advised that £803 had been collected on 19th November at The Meadows Shopping Centre. This figure has subsequently been enhanced from donations received at the Juniors Christmas Coffee Morning and the amount we have sent to Children in Need has risen to £839.

Logistics Support

Over the years, the support that has been provided by parents has been a major contributor to the music experiences of our members. We always welcome new additions to our Logistics Team to help spread the load regarding commitment and, if anyone would like to offer their support, we will be happy to provide information about membership of our Logistics Team. This can be done via the 'contact us' section of our website or at one of our Saturday morning rehearsals. Thank you
