Open Morning for Tutor Programme – 10 November 2018

A leaflet and covering letter publicizing our upcoming 'Open Morning' for those wanting to learn to play a woodwind or brass instrument was handed out to our membership on 13th October. We hope that everyone has had the opportunity of promoting the 'Open Morning' on our behalf, either by direct contact with friends or through school, college or social media contacts. Lessons for those that enrol on 10 November will start in January 2019, with a 25% reduction in the cost of the first term of lessons.

As was advised in our October Newsletter, we must continually plan ahead for the next generation of musicians for recruitment into our Junior Section. Our Tutor Programme is the key to this progression and the continuing well-being of the Orchestra as a viable music facility for young people.

Christmas Concerts – Friday 7 December and Saturday 8 December

On 18 October we circulated to parents and our membership, via email, details regarding the Christmas Concerts at High Cross Church. A copy of this email can be found in the 'Parent Info – Letters and Forms' section of our web site .

Tickets for the Christmas Concerts are available to order from Linda McNaughton via email to , or at Saturday morning rehearsals up until 1st December 2018. Once ordered, tickets can be collected from Linda at rehearsals.

All three Sections of the Orchestra will be performing in the Christmas Concerts at High Cross Church, with the Junior Section joining with the Senior Section in presenting the concert on the Friday Night (7th December) and the Intermediate Section joining with the Senior Section to present the concert on the Saturday Night (8th December). The concerts will start at 7.30pm and are expected to conclude by 10.00pm.

The concert ticket price is £8.50 and a free ticket is available for any Junior or Intermediate Section member who attends the concert with their parents on the night they are not playing themselves. The ticket price includes an interval mince pie and hot/cold drink. As our Junior Section will be participating in our Christmas Concert programme, there will not be a separate Christmas Coffee Morning for them this year. Detailed instructions regarding times of attendance for both the rehearsal and the concert at High Cross Church will be issued in mid-November.

Orchestra Uniform

We would like to remind all Orchestra members of the uniform to be worn at concerts. This is as follows:-

  • CYWO polo shirt (Green for Juniors, Blue for Intermediates and Black for Seniors) Conventional black trousers for both boys and girls (not leggings, jeans or grey school trousers)

  • Black socks

  • Smart black shoes

If a member is new to the Junior Section, or has changed sections since they last represented the Orchestra, then a new or exchange of polo shirt will take place this month. Please ensure any polo shirt that has been loaned and which is no longer required is returned when a new polo short is issued.

Help & Support at the Christmas Concerts

We are seeking parent volunteers to help with supervision and refreshments at both concerts. If you are available to help on either of these evenings and are willing to help, especially if it is an evening you are not watching the concert yourself, please email the Orchestra Secretary, Sandra Kay on

Without the active participation of a number of parents at our Christmas Concerts, it will not be possible for us to deliver to our Orchestra members and the concert audience, the level of enjoyment of the experience that everyone has now come to expect. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

The donations of a raffle prize would also be appreciated to help with our fundraising. If you have a prize to donate, please bring it to a Saturday morning rehearsal. Thank you.
