November 2019 Newsletter

Autumn Performances

We hope that everyone has enjoyed their half-term break and took the opportunity of reading the link in our CYWO email of 31 October which gave detailed instructions regarding attendance for performances by each section of our Orchestra over the next few weeks of the Autumn Term.

Please make sure you have the dates for rehearsals and performances recorded in you diaries, so you can ensure you make yourself available to perform with your section on the dates stated. We know how busy you can all be with regards to your other activities and interests in the lead up to Christmas. It is however important that your Orchestra section has fully representation on both the stated performance dates and also the rehearsals leading up to these, to make sure the standard of performance reflects well on all our sections. Thank you.

Children in Need 2019

The Senior Section of the Orchestra will be performing at The Meadows Shopping Centre in Camberley on Saturday 16th November between 10.30am and 12.30pm (please note new timing) to raise funds in support of this years BBC Children in Need appeal.

If you are a parent of an Orchestra member and are available to help at some time during that morning by holding a collection tin, please get in touch via the 'Contact Us' section on the Home page of our web site . We have already had a number of offers of help following our request in the October Newsletter, but more volunteers would ensure that all collection positions at The Meadows are covered. Thank you.

Christmas Concerts 2019

Tickets for the Orchestra’s Christmas Concerts at High Cross Church Camberley

on the nights of Friday 13th & Saturday 14th December 2019 are now available to order from Linda McNaughton by email to , or at Saturday morning rehearsals up until 7th December 2019. Once ordered, tickets can be collected from Linda at rehearsals with effect from 23 November 2019.

The Senior and Intermediate Sections of the Orchestra will be performing both nights, with the Christmas concert programme being the same each evening. The concerts will start at 7.30pm and conclude by 10.00pm.

The concert ticket price this year will be £9, a small increase from last year to cover higher costs in staging the concerts, and a free ticket is available for all Junior Section members that attend. The ticket price includes an interval mince pie and hot/cold drink.

As usual, we are seeking parent volunteers to help with refreshments on either of these evenings, both with setting up and then serving during the interval. If you are willing to help, please get in touch via the 'Contact Us' section on the Home page of our web site We will be delighted to hear from you.

The active support of parents on the evenings of our Christmas Concerts is key to the delivery of an enjoyable festive experience, both for our Orchestra members and for all those that attend the concerts.

The donation of raffle prizes for our Christmas Concerts would also be appreciated to help with our fund-raising. Please bring your donation to a Saturday morning rehearsal. Thank you.

Christmas Coffee Morning - Saturday 14th December 2019

We will be holding a ‘Christmas Coffee Morning’ for parents, grandparents and friends of our Junior Section members at Cordwalles School commencing at 11.15am and finishing at 12.00 noon, with coffee and a seasonal mince pie served.

The purpose of the morning is to give parents, grandparents and friends the opportunity to watch our Junior Section members in rehearsal. We are sure they will be interested to see the progress our Junior Section has made during the short time that they have been rehearsing together in the Autumn term.

Rehearsals for Junior Section members on 14th December will start at the normal time of 9.30am.

Tutor Programme 2020

Further to our October Newsletter, we are giving advanced notice of our plan to hold an 'Open Morning' on Saturday 18 January 2020 for those young people who would like to learn a brass or woodwind musical instrument to have the opportunity to come to the school to try out some instruments under the guidance of our specialist brass and woodwind tutors.

As part of the new Tutor Programme package we will be offering to those that would like to progress their interest in learning a musical instrument, the first 10 lessons will be completely free of charge. The only commitment we will ask of those that participate in the programme is that they join the Junior Section of our Orchestra as soon as their instrument tutor believes they are ready.

This 2020 initiative will be funded from a generous Bursary that has been set up for our Orchestra by the family of the late Sandra Kay in her memory for CYWO projects that it is felt Sandra would have wanted to support. The Orchestra was of course an important part of her life.

Whilst there will be a publicity campaign to promote the Tutor Programme later in the year and into January, if you are aware of any young person that would be interested in this opportunity, without a significant initial expense to their parents, please encourage them to come along on 18 January 2020, or alternatively parents may like to make early contact to confirm an interest and request further information, by emailing .

The purpose of our Tutor Programme is to secure the long term future of our Orchestra, bearing in mind that there is only limited access and encouragement for the learning of a musical instrument in local schools. Your assistance is helping up promote this Tutor Programme will be very much appreciated.
